Have you ever bought anything at your local supermarket that was “reduced for quick sale”?

quick sale

This can include meat, vegetables, dairy, etc. My local Kroger puts perishables on sale for a fraction of the cost shortly before they expire. Last night, I saw some cubed steaks that were half off becuase the sell by date is the 16. They were practically green with discoloration. They also had half and half (light cream) that was nearly 75% off because it expired today. Who actually buys this stuff??

Well duh probably everyone!

I buy some stuff that’s reduced for quick sale but never anything that has discoloration or expired, that’s just NASTY and unsafe!

3

I do.But only some of the baked goods, like bread or donuts.

4

I buy reduced steaks, but ONLY if they still look good…

It’s cool to save a buck, but not if it costs me a roll of toilet paper on the way out!

LOL

I don’t because I know I won’t eat it fast enough and most of it will be wasted anyway. I’m the person you see digging at the back of the shelves for the freshest stuff lol.

Ive bought meat that expires soon before- but not when its icky colored! its usually ok if you cook it that night. but you have to be smart about it, if its gross colored, its probably just gross. I would never ever buy dairy on clearance though. that just sounds deadly. lol.

I do!!
The discoloration you see is from the over head lighting in the store. Many stores that sell ground beef will remove it from the original package and mix it with fresh to “hide” the brown/greenish color. The expiration dates are mostly for the groceries last day of sale. It is not uneatable.
If you cook or use these items within a day or two, they’re fine and will save you a bundle. You can afford to buy more expensive cuts.

i have bought that stuff before. food generally wont go bad right on the day of, but it’s more of a guideline. i will only buy items if they still look edible not moldy or discolored and i will use it right away or freeze it right away when i get home.

I do, I always buy what is on sale but I make sure it is not green. Remember sell buy date is not the same as experation date. I like to buy meat that is on sale and freeze it. Wal-mart give you the price per ounce on the price tag so you can see if you are getting a good deal. I don’t buy diary on sale because you really can’t freeze milk. Well I guess you could freeze milk but I never have tried.

It sounds to me like your local Kroger is waiting too long to reduce items for quick sale, or you’re only getting to them AFTER the good stuff has been cleared out.

Ask a employee when items are out out for quick sale, and try to show up shortly after the items are made available. This way, you get first pick at the items that are in good shape.

The Stop and Shop near my home often has items reduced for quick sale, and I’ve never had any issues with the products I purchased. The meat was always in good shape, and the vegetables were never more than a tad bit wilted, something that’s easy to rectify with a wash and an hour or so soaking in water.

Some stores hang onto products at full price, trying to wring every last penny out of the stock’s value. This is a misery and foolish way to run a store. You end up with a lot of spoiled merchandise on the shelves and you lose customers.

Other stores manage their stock so that even the items priced for quick sale are appetizing and safe. Those stores do the best business overall, because people are more inclined to trust their stock.

You have to be careful when you buy the reduced stuff.
But if you are smart, you can get a good buy. Obviously you would not have bought the green steak, but other things can be just fine as long as you use them immediately.
As for the half-and-half, if it has been stored correctly, it would still be good for several days after the “best before”. That is what it means….”best before”…It is a guarantee up to that day. After that day, they won’t say if it is good or not. But my experience tells me you are good on the day and several days after…but not a lot…

Yes, i actually got some Sour Cream for free this way. It was the day of the ’sell by’, and they were just giving it away. It was still good. But you know what they say…can sour cream really go sour?
