But what is the benifit of having them do this, and do I need it ??

The only way to answer that question would be to know all of your equipment and how much each piece draws. There are other considerations as well..how many volts do you need and do you need 2 or 3 phases? These are questions best left to an electrician. Retail spaces usually don’t need a lot of special electric…..it’s when you are running larger equipment that the heavier loads become necessary. Why don’t you check with other store owners?

1000 amps at what voltage 277/480 in a switch gear, then xformer out to a 120/208 panels ? ( commerical spaces are usaully 480 votls 3 phase coming in with a transformer to step down to 120/208 3 phase, the 277/480 run lighting and AC loads, the 120/208 outlets and misc small equiptment loads ). BTW 1000 amp service will run 3 to 5 unit depending on the draw and type of business. At currently I am working on a dental office in a small mall with it’s own 400 amp gear section ( 120 / 208 volts 3 phase 4 wire ) which in turn will feed 2 - 200 amp panels ( 3 phase 4wire 120/208 volts ) pretty much fully loaded out. It’s about a 4500 sqaure foot unit. Both panels are 42 circuit panels which is common. smaller unit will have 30 circuit panels.
